The exotic granadilla fruit, which is called passionfruit in America. Translated from English, the name means "fruit of passion." In the 16th century, Catholic missionaries considered him an aphrodisiac.

The Italian historian Giacomo Bosio put forward a theory in 1610 that the name of the fruit is directly related to religion - the sufferings of Christ on the cross. He argued that the crown of the plant is like a crown of thorns, and its pistils are like nails with which the Savior was nailed to the cross.

What is special

Granadilla is the fruit of a treelike passionflower, which belongs to the Passionflower family. Its homeland is considered to be South America, where sunny and warm weather prevails. Today the species is cultivated for:

  • Hawaii,
  • Jamaica,
  • Haiti,
  • the territory of Mexico.

The fruits are ovoid, no more than 8 cm in diameter and weighing on average 100 g. They are covered with a hard, but very thin skin, which in ripe granadilla has an orange-yellow color.

The pulp is watery, jelly-like consistency. It has black spots and a pleasant sweet and sour taste, reminiscent of gooseberries. The fruit has a general strengthening effect on the body and restores vitality after viral diseases and physical exertion. There are over 20 edible passionflower species, including the passionfruit, which differs from the granadilla in its skin color.

Residents of Mexico and other countries of tropical America use not only the fruits of the plant in their everyday life. Tea is brewed from dried leaves, and passionflower root is used in many recipes of traditional medicine as a remedy for constipation and epilepsy.
